Modric Needs that Real Madrid Flair for Croatia

I think it's safe to say that Modric is one of the best midfielders in the world. Nobody would argue with that. He plays for one of the strongest clubs there are, and he's vital for that team. So much so that when he hasn't played, they don't function and don't win.

So why can't Modric bring this kind of quality for a more important cause: Croatia? What is missing? Why can he not dominate games as well?

The first obvious answer is the difference of those around him. At Madrid, Modric has very good players, one of which is Kroos right next to him who is one of the best in his position.

Same can't be said for Croatia, so he's required to do a lot more and can't rely on giving passes to his teammates, and expect them to keep the ball as well as those in Madrid do.

That may be fair but Modric's performance in and of himself hasn't been as good for Croatia as it has been for Madrid. He gets lost in the games and doesn't push forward from midfield in the way he gracefully does for Real.

That needs to change starting from today against Turkey because his country needs him and he owes them the best of Luka. What's the point in being touted as one of the best central midfielders in the world if you can't strut yourself for your own country?

If Modric brings his best game, that will permeate throughout the team and others will raise their performance. Then we can begin to have a conversation of Croatia being outsiders and dark horses. But if Modric doesn't step up and just disappears like he's done for Croatia before, then they aren't going anywhere and won't do anything of note in this tournament. HH
