Why does Giroud get so much hate? How are you about to play a tournament on your own home soil, and you have to contend with your own fans possibly booing you? That is unheard of, unacceptable and it could bite France in the backside. Because it's either Giroud or...drum roll s'il vous plait....Gignac.
The French public have to contend with the fact Benzema won't be playing and Giroud will now be the first choice striker. Once that has been accepted, they need to give him all the support he needs. If he misses, they have to keep encouraging him and helping him through until he clicks. Positive support goes a long way, especially when you are the home team.
Olivier is not the greatest striker in the world, we know this. This isn't Henry, Anelka or Trezeguet. He's a target man who can link up the play, and that's about it. Don't expect him to beat three players and smack a G in the top corner. Don't wait to see an overhead kick or an audacious volley. That simply isn't his game, and to be disappointed when that doesn't happen is being idiotic.
I'm going out on a limb by saying Olivier could end up with the golden boot. With all the abuse he's taken, and the French public not warming to him, I think he might prove the doubters wrong. Just as long as the team plays to his strengths and not his weaknesses, and give him expert crosses into the box, then Olivier will rack up those G's.
My message to the French public on the eve of this opening game. Support Olivier. Put an arm around him and give him that support that could elevate him and allow the dude to seize the moment for a country that I know he will give 200% for.
Let's just hope he doesn't miss any open goals....HH
