I think Luka read and saw my preview and answered the call. I called his performances for Croatia very disappointing for a player so talented and urged him to play like he can. Against Turkey today, he finally did and delivered one fo the best G's at these Euros.
What I wanted from Modric was a performance, and the entire Croatian stepped it up from the very start of the game. But it was Modric who was the one running the show, getting the ball and setting the tone for Croatia. That is what gave the whole team the confidence to take the game to Turkey.
But this is a game of goals and Modric stepped up to deliver one fine strike that was the winning one. The technique and just the execution from a ball that flew at him, was perfection. Most keepers would not have saved that with the amount of traffic that was around when the ball sizzled through.
He ran back to tackle when he needed and was always one the ball, looking to get Croatia ticking. It was a very good performance in a passionate match that the both fans contributed to with Modric leading the way.
Croatia can't stop here. They have to keep improving as they play Spain next. But if Modric can play at his high level that we know he can, then Croatia can go far in this tournament. They need not fear anyone because they are good enough to beat any team in this competition. It's important though that Modric, their star player, keeps playing like he did today and is the one who defines how they play. When he does, it has a positive effect and they actually look like a really good team that functions really well. HH
