Why does my good friend Cristiano keep giving me new reasons to dislike him? Why? It would be a change of mood if he actually began to be more likeable and said things that would force me to rethink my stance on him. But no, no, no. Our good friend Cristiano doesn't work like that.
So after being held to a draw by a very well-organised, spirited Iceland who have made history by getting their very first point in a major competition, guess who had to ruin all their fun? You guessed it. Somehow, instead of trying to assess where they went wrong and applaud Iceland's efforts, he had to go ahead and criticize them for defending and being too negative.
Yeah, that's right kids. Cristiano believes that a nation of just over three hundred thousand who have never played in a major tournament, should just go ahead and attack Portugal. A team with players from Real Madrid and other major European clubs.
Don't know if he's looked at a map recently, but Iceland is a rather small nation...so they are small.
Instead of talking and just flapping his lips, he needs to concentrate on their next two games that they need to win. They aren't easy, and Austria will especially want to get a win after losing to Hungary. This game is done with. It ended as a draw and as captain, he should lead by example and get his teammates to focus on the next game.
Truth is, if Portugal are to go far in this tournament, it won't depend on him. The little known Andre Gomes looks to be that key player for Portugal to be a success, not Cristina. So all this parading, and preaching won't help matters and does not help the team in moving forward. He really needs a healthy dose of humble pie and must step aside and allow better players to take hold of the team and help Portugal to push forward and try and win this, which they can. HH
